Jesus told His disciples the entire time He had been with them He had been speaking to them using figurative language.
In Chapter 5 the high priest commanded Jesus,
“Tell us if You are the Christ, the Son of God!”
Matthew 26:63 NKJV
Yet, Jesus would not tell them who He was. Jesus only replied,
“You say I am!”

Jesus saying, “You say I am” was a type of figurative language He had been using.
Now we are going to see Jesus using yet another type of figurative language when He speaks about “the Son.” Jesus never directly refers to Himself as “the Son” and not once, does Jesus ever declare, “I am the Son!”
